The key role of the Head of House is to oversee the welfare, safety, and wellbeing of students within an assigned boarding house or accommodation area. Reporting to the Course Director, The Heads of House manages a team of Welfare Staff whilst they are carrying out pastoral duties and monitoring the boarding house. They will supervise students throughout the day and contribute to a positive residential environment. Staff work two out of three shifts per day, with time off allocated on a rota system


Main Responsibilities

Supervise and support students throughout the day, including wake-up, mealtimes, afternoon and evening activities, and bedtime duties.


Lead and manage the Welfare team within the house, ensuring students’ safety, wellbeing, and pastoral needs are met.


Create a boarding house rota for the Welfare team, allocating times, and areas of the house to be supervised.


Collaborate with the school team and help to maintain strong relationships with House Masters, and Duty Managers


Live in the assigned boarding house and contribute to its smooth running, working collaboratively with colleagues. Build an understanding of the house specifications and know where student’s rooms are specifically located.


Enforce the behaviour policy and set the standards of the boarding house. Manage and train the junior team, enabling them to successfully implement the standards and control discipline.


Ensure a high standard of cleanliness and respect for school property is always adhered to. Plan student room checks within the boarding house rota.


Respond to safeguarding and medical incidents, reporting through the correct channels and supporting staff during emergencies.


Conduct fire drills, maintain accurate registers, and ensure first aid cover and equipment are in place.


Attend daily senior management meetings and weekly review sessions, communicating updates and maintaining high standards.


PERSON SPECIFICATION – HEAD OF HOUSE


All staff contribute to the overall smooth running of the camp. The safety of students is paramount, and high standards are expected when working within a professional and reputable organisation at all times. Heads of House maintain high personal standards, demonstrate a friendly, positive, and approachable manner, and remain professional and calm under pressure. They must handle sensitive situations with care and respect, adhering to confidentiality and data protection guidance.


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL


Have experience managing a team of staff and supervising children in educational, residential boarding environments.


Be confident, proactive, and able to respond effectively to emergencies.


Demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
